BEDFORD County Commissioners Partner with the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections to Conduct an Organization Review of the Bedford County Correctional Facility

BEDFORD, PA—The Bedford County Board of Commissioners partnered with the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections to conduct an organizational review of the Bedford County Correctional Facility. This organizational review was prompted by an employment investigation performed in September 2020. The Department of Corrections was notified, and an organizational review began on Monday November 30, 2020. Deputy Warden Rocky Bernazzoli and Warden Nelson were placed on paid administrative leave for the duration of the organizational review. Deputy Superintendent Bobbi Jo Salamon, from SCI Houtzdale, became our Acting Warden on November 30, 2020. At the conclusion of the organizational review and internal investigations conducted by Bedford County, the employment relationship between Warden Troy Nelson, and Deputy Wardens Rocky Bernazzoli, and Jason Moore has ended.

Deputy Superintendent Salamon and the PA Dept. of Corrections, Bureau of Investigation and Intelligence have communicated a summary of recommendations to the County Commissioners. They are working to put their recommendations into a report for the Bedford County Commissioners regarding operational, procedural, staffing, and security needs. Deputy Salamon’s last day with the Correctional Facility is Wednesday January 20, 2021.

Replacing Deputy Salamon is Captain Joseph Eichenlaub from SCI Smithfield (Huntingdon County). Prior to his Corrections Career Captain Eichenlaub served six years in the United States Marine Corps. He began his corrections career in 1996 moving through the ranks as a Corrections Officer 1, Sergeant, Shift Lieutenant, and Security Lieutenant. As a Captain he has performed duties related to daily facility operations, internal security practices, facility inspections, and special projects. Captain Eichenlaub will continue to assist Bedford County through this transition to ensure the highest efficiency and operation of security success of the Bedford County Correctional Facility.

The Bedford County Board of Commissioners is thankful for the assistance and guidance provided by Deputy Superintendent Salamon and the PA Dept. of Corrections. This organizational review will aid in increasing safety and security within the facility, improve the workplace environment for correctional facility employees, and enhance the overall facility for the inmate population and their experience with the facility.
