Commissioners Launch Broadband Expansion Projected to Serve 3,900 Customers

Today, the Bedford County Commissioners in cooperation with Alleghenies Broadband, Inc. (ABI) have launched Phase One of their fluid Master Plan that will expand internet services to unserved and underserved areas throughout Bedford County. Following a solicitation for proposals, Crowsnest Broadband was selected as the provider of Phase One Bedford County Wireless Expansion.

The project includes the purchase and installation of wireless point-to-point (PTP) and point-to-multipoint (PIMP) equipment on twenty-one (21) existing towers in Bedford County. Of the proposed 21 towers, four towers will be supplied with fiber-optic service, all others will be linked with commercial, licensed, canier class, wireless backhauls that feature multi-gigabit speeds and low latency. These wireless links will be designed in a ring configuration so that each tower is supplied with one or more links which provides not only redundancy, but also more bandwidth.

Crowsnest Broadband will purchase and install Ubiquiti & Radwin equipment featuring industry best PTMP technology allowing each tower to supply customers with speeds up to 150 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload. These speeds will comfortably meet the needs of families making particularly heavy use of video, gaming, video calls, and file sharing. It will also accommodate larger businesses needing to upload large data files or use video calls extensively.

The following table provides a list of tower sites, areas impacted, and the projected number of customers served through the project which must be completed no later than July 2022.
